To enhance academic exchanges and international cooperation, the Graduate School, in collaboration with the School of Textile Science and Engineering, invited Professor Seeram Ramakrishna, a foreign academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, to give an academic lecture and engage in discussions on December 1, 2023. The title of the lecture was "Future Directions of Fibers". The lecture was presided over by Wang Dong, the dean of the Graduate School, and Professor Liu Yanbo from the School of Textile Science and Engineering. Faculty members and students from both schools attended the lecture.
Professor Liu Yanbo first introduced the research and work experience of Professor Seeram Ramakrishna, and warmly welcomed his presence. During the lecture, Professor Seeram Ramakrishna talked about the discovery and synthesis of various types of fibers over thousands of years, as well as their changes and applications in the progress of human civilization. Regarding the future development of fibers, he pointed out that the rapid advancement of modern science and the goal of mitigating climate change have already laid the foundation for "smart fibers and sustainable fibers". "Material cycling" is a core feature of the Earth's biosphere, which is a significant fact. Professor Seeram Ramakrishna proposed that embracing materials and a circular economy enables us to live in harmony with nature. In the future, sustainable fibers can promote a healthy living environment through circular economy, reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, waste, and resource consumption. Professor Seeram Ramakrishna had lively discussions with the attending faculty and students on related fiber issues, answering their questions and clarifying their doubts. The participating faculty and students expressed their appreciation for the rich and fascinating content of the lecture and gained valuable insights. Finally, they sincerely thanked Professor Seeram Ramakrishna and took a group photo to commemorate the event.
Biography:
Professor Seeram Ramakrishna is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in the UK, a Fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering, a Fellow of the Singapore Academy of Engineering, a Fellow of the ASEAN Academy of Engineering and Technology, a Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering, and the Director of the Nanofiber and Nanotechnology Center at the National University of Singapore. In November 2023, he was elected as a foreign academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. He has been selected by Thomson Reuters as "one of the most influential scientists in the world" and ranked by Stanford's composite score (c-score) as a highly influential researcher in materials, biomedical engineering, and other fields globally. Since 2014, Seeram has been recognized by Clarivate Analytics as one of the top 1% highly cited scientists in the field of materials science and interdisciplinary research worldwide.
